Sushi tacos – that's what I call a dish that combines elements of both sushi and tacos, although I might receive some angry comments from both Japanese and Mexican people for making such a comparison. Why sushi? Because I make this dish when my family is craving sushi, but I usually don't have the time or the desire to spend hours rolling sushi. Instead, when I prepare sushi tacos, I get all the ingredients ready for sushi, but we eat them like tacos! I turn nori sheets into "tortillas" and then everyone can fill their sushi tacos with whatever they like! It's a simple dish, loved by all and it can be made quite quickly, making it perfect for both weekend and weekday lunches or dinners.

Ingredients

  • Nori (seaweed) sheets

  • Cucumber

  • Avocado

  • Mango

  • Cooked rice

  • Sesame seeds

  • Soy sauce

  • Pickled ginger (optional)

  • Garlic chives (optional)

  • Carrots (optional)

  • Wasabi (optional)

Instructions

I cook the rice in salted water.

For the cucumbers and carrots (if I use them), I slice them into thin strips using a mandoline. The mango and avocado are cut into slices.

I chop the green onions.

I cut the nori sheets into quarters (halving them and then halving them again).

I lay out all the ingredients on the table and invite the family to lunch or dinner.

How do we eat sushi tacos? Everyone does it their own way! I take a chopped nori sheet, add rice, and my favorite ingredients (for example, cucumber + avocado; mango + cucumber + avocado, etc.). On top, I sprinkle sesame seeds, chopped green onions, ginger, and wasabi, then drizzle with soy sauce and voilà!

The best part is that everyone can make their sushi tacos with whatever ingredients they like, which is especially great for kids - "I want this ingredient, I don’t want that one". When each person makes their own, they create the tastiest version just for themselves!
